Weighted GPA Calculator — Semester & Cumulative GPA
Add your courses, credits, and grades to estimate semester GPA. Toggle Weighted or Unweighted, and optionally fold in prior credits for a new cumulative GPA. Built for U.S. high school and college students — not a school SIS.
Your courses
How it works
Add each class with a letter or percentage grade and credit hours. Sample rows load so you can poke the numbers right away.
Weighted adds Honors (+0.5) or AP/IB (+1.0) on a capped ~5.0 scale. Unweighted sticks to a plain 4.0 map.
Enter credits you already finished to estimate a new cumulative average after this term.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA treats every course the same on a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA rewards tougher coursework so an A in AP Chemistry can outrank an A in a regular elective. Colleges often recalculate with their own rules — this tool mirrors a common high-school pattern so you can plan, not replace a transcript.
Default boosts on this site
- Regular: no boost
- Honors: +0.5 grade points
- AP / IB: +1.0 grade points
- Cap: 5.0 after weighting
How GPA is calculated
Convert each grade to points, multiply by credits (quality points), then divide:
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
Example: one 3-credit A (4.0) and one 3-credit B (3.0) → (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.5. With AP weighting, that A might become 5.0 points before the same division. Percentage mode first maps your score to a letter using common U.S. bands (93–96 → A, and so on).
FAQ
What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes such as Honors, AP, or IB. On a common 5.0-style scale, an A in AP might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0.
What is an unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale?
Letter grades map to points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, … F = 0) with no boost for course rigor. Every class uses the same chart.
How do you calculate GPA from credits?
GPA = Σ(points × credits) / Σ(credits). Empty or zero-credit rows are skipped.
Do AP and Honors raise GPA the same everywhere?
No. Districts and colleges differ on boosts and caps. Match your student handbook when it matters for class rank or applications.
Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA?
Semester covers this term only. Cumulative blends prior credits — fill the prior GPA fields to estimate the combined average.
Can I use percentages instead of letters?
Yes — switch Grade entry to Percentage. Cutoffs here follow a common U.S. band; your school may differ.
Is this my official school GPA?
No. It is an unofficial planning estimate. Official numbers come from your school or registrar.
Does A+ count above 4.0 here?
By default A+ and A are both 4.0 unweighted. Some colleges use 4.3 for A+ — check their chart.
